Letter to the Editor: CURRYING FAVOR WITH A DIMINISHED POLITCAL FORCE

Editor, Times-Advocate:

So, let me see if I have this right: Mayor Abed uses his Town Hall meeting to render an opinion on a project proposal that hasn’t yet gone before the city Planning Commission, let alone the City Council. This is the same thing … without the xenophobic undertones…hizzoner did a few years back, which resulted in Escondido taxpayers being forced just last week to fork over $500,000 in a settlement with the ACLU that only Sam Abed could characterize as a “victory.”

Public officials are not supposed to render opinion on anything that might go before them in a public hearing until that hearing. Ironically, the mayor himself acknowledged that when…as reported in the same article…he demurred when asked to discuss rumors of another BMX facility being proposed in Kit Carson Park. His stance on the Country Club property is nothing more than currying favor with a diminished political power center that pursued a Quixotic goal of forcing a private property owner to bend to their will.
